The communication tool I would use with my parents is email. As for my students, who are in 2nd grade I would probably start off with email. My niece who is 7 years old loves to text on her mom's phone and now has an email account. She loves to send emails. I always reply to her emails because it helps her in her writing and spelling skills. The only drawback is she expects a reply instantly.
